Anglepoise celebrates 80th Anniversary @ Light+Building

April 16, 2012 under Exhibitions, Latest News

Anglepoise is extremely proud to announce at Light+Building that 2012 is our 80th Anniversary.

Light+Building, world’s largest trade fair for lighting and intelligent buildings, takes place in Frankfurt on 15-‐20 April 2012.

The event has ‘energy efficiency’ as its key theme and interestingly, it was this subject that, back in 1932, led George Carwardine to design the original Anglepoise lamp.

Carwardine was, at that time, a vehicle suspension systems designer. While developing new concepts for vehicle suspensions, he created a mechanism which he recognised had applications in other fields. He particularly saw its benefits for an efficient task lamp. The joints and spring tension allowed the lamp to be moved into a wide range of positions, which it maintained without being clamped. Carwardine patented a lamp design and began manufacture in his company workshops. He soon found the interest and demand so great that he needed a major partner and so he entered into a licensing agreement with the Terry Spring Company in Redditch, England. Terry’s then manufactured and marketed the lamp under the name Anglepoise.

Continuing this tradition Anglepoise is especially proud to announce our new lighting range. Called Anglepoise Duo, the range covers table, wall, floor and pendant lamps.

Each lamp is inspired by the ingenious original George Carwardine designed Terry’s Anglepoise lamp. Some lamps in the range use the original mechanism; others are fixed with adjustable shades, but all continue the 80 Year tradition of placing the light source right where it is required, a heritage we are proud to celebrate at Light+Building.

Come and see the range for yourself and visit us in Hall 1.1 on stand G31.

Arachnophobes beware of the new Giant 1227 Chandelier!

October 20, 2011 under Latest News, Press Releases

Anglepoise Giant 1227 chandalier

We have been working hard for the last couple of weeks to come up with a product that really has to be seen to be believed. Spanning 4.5 metres across, and weighing over 300 KG, this really is a piece that makes a visual impact. It has also challenged our abilities in the art of structural engineering to deal with the huge forces involved. It will be shown for  the first time at Quibique, a new designer show in Germany next week ….. press release follows ……

An extraordinary Giant Chandelier for Qubique, Berlin

Qubique, the ‘next generation trade show’ makes its debut at Berlin Tempelhof Airport and runs from the 26th to 29th October 2011. The exhibition promises an eclectic yet exclusive mix of high-class brands. A focal point is the Giant 1227 Chandelier by British lighting company Anglepoise. The prototype chandelier is an evolution of the Giant 1227 floor standing lamp. This was originally commissioned for the Roald Dahl Museum in the UK and is now shipped all over the world. Roald Dahl is famed for his wild and imaginative children’s stories that, in recent times, have been turned into blockbuster movies such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
For Qubique and following the spirit of this lively British author, the Anglepoise design team have produced a monster of a lighting creation. The chandelier, which is 4.5 metres in diameter, consists of eight Giant 1227 lamps.  The jointed and movable arms will undoubtedly draw arachnid comparisons, fitting of Dahl’s stories.

Simon Terry, Innovation Director of Anglepoise Ltd said: “The Giant 1227 Chandelier is designed to create a wow factor for Templehof Airport’s unique space. We have pushed the technical boundaries of structure and balance that something of this scale demands. It has been a fun project but the best part is creating a sculptural piece that makes people smile when they see it.”

It is the first in a new generation of products that fuse our innovative system of balance with the latest LED technology. It is a strikingly seductive design that blends a range of high quality materials including glass, anodized aluminum and stainless steel.

The light has been designed by Kenneth Grange, our Design Director, in the year that he is celebrated in a five-decade retrospective exhibition at the London Design Museum entitled ‘Kenneth Grange: Making Britain Modern’. Primarily engineered as a task light for the specification market, the product features touch sensitive dimming and light level memory.

A significant part of the design consideration was to build sustainability into the product. This has been achieved by providing an interchangeable head and driver unit so they can be upgraded or replaced at any time. Anglepoise has followed this philosophy for the last 75 years, which is why so many of our products are still functioning today.

Simon Terry, Director of Anglepoise Ltd said: “After 75 years of Anglepoise tradition, and 150 years of manufacturing we have always felt that it was important as a family business to rejuvenate the ideas that made us innovators in the first place whilst engaging with the latest technologies. The new TypeC is at the heart of that journey ”

Sir Basil Spence, Celebration of a Modern Architect

July 17, 2007 under Latest News, Projects

Basil Spence
The event organisers used the Anglepoise Type75 to help light the expedition pieces on the table. You can see from the images above how well this works. BACK TO THE FUTURE: Sir Basil Spence (1907-1976), Celebration of a Modern Architect 19th October 2007 – 10th February 2008 Dean Gallery, National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh The exhibition, which has been jointly devised and curated by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) and the National Galleries of Scotland, draws largely on the Sir Basil Spence Archive held at RCAHMS. The exhibition considers Spence’s extraordinary career which spanned a time of great social change within Britain. Few architects can match the variety of work which he achieved which included a Cathedral, an airport, country houses, universities and an embassy. A wealth of fascinating original material is organised in a series of themes and case studies which explore these key achievements as well as Spence’s less well known works.
